What keeps people active on the same platform?

I always find it interesting when people stay on one community for a long time because there are so many choices these days. Some users join a place and leave after a week while others stay for years. I came across gayteam recently and started thinking about what makes people keep coming back. Is it the conversations or mostly the people you meet there?
